Anthropological Study of African Material Culture

A variety of tools and wares, machines and devices are flooding our surroundings. Properly placing only necessary items in the home is not only a matter of personal lifestyle but also a reflection of knowledge and behavioral style, or culture that the person has learned from the society. Because of this cultural aspect of household goods, ethnographic museums have gathered numerous objects to show the world's culture.

But keep in mind that, when objects move, they may be accepted in new areas and stimulate the creativity of the people there. An object may get different names in different places, and may be used for different purposes. Uncovering various people’s various memories with respect to one object goes beyond simply revealing the history of "Social Life of Things" (Appadurai 1986), but also revealing the history of people's interactions. Consideration of how modern society is organized, based on such histories envisaged through researches of material objects, would be the new methodology required to the 21st-century study of material culture.
